Steps in obtaining a career in optometry:
Step 1 - obtain lenses and diagnostic kit: Complete.
Step 2 - do not fail: In progress…            (Hence my lack of presence, apologies my lovelies.              Though I’m sure no one noticed…Step 2b: self-loathing)

10 Things about Melbourne/Australia that tickles my fancy:

1) Passion fruit flavored everything: yogurt, cheesecake, etc (YUM!).

2) Queen Victoria Market.

3) I have a cool Canadian accent.

4) 24/7 cafés and restaurants.

5) Golden sand buns from Nam Loong.

6) Peppers = capsicums.

6) Sedan + Pickup truck = Utes.

7) Tim Tam/ Tam Tam Slam

8) Snickers Pods

9) Hipsters

10) Victorian style architecture

Alas, I have arrived in Melbourne.

And I’m homesick already. This is not a good sign.

I suppose just coming off a 33 hour trip could do me in just so.

It’s finally hitting me that I’m in a completely foreign city, country, and continent. I don’t know anyone or anywhere, and am completely lost.

Perhaps I should try to unpack my above average amount of luggages, go to bed early, and try to figure everything out tomorrow.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!…or any Melbournians want to show a strange foreign girl around town? LOL

For all you folks that are moving or will move in the future…

Vacuum seal bags are your best friend.

Seriously, I’m in love.

I just vacuum sealed a queen sized duvet, 2 bed sheets, and 2 pillows in one large bag. I still have 3/4 of room left in my luggage. I know, it’s a beautiful thing.

The sound of air rustling through the vacuum tube and the sight of its decreasing volume makes my heart tingle.

I QUIT TODAY! =D

Crazy how fast things are happening, one more month and I’ll be in Melbourne!

Anyone know the cheapest way/company to ship goods from Canada to Australia?

Are Australians really racist towards Asians?

My excitement of getting into Melbourne OD has been tarnished by responses from everyone that I’ve told.

The first response from everyone was “Really? Oh. You know they are really racist towards Asians right?”

I would like to believe this is not true, but these were told by first person accounts from both Asians and non-Asians. I’ve been told that they are openly racist in person and even on TV.

I have also been told that it’s not true, but how much of it do people really hear or notice?
People wouldn’t really notice racism unless they are part of a racial minority.

But then again, racism is everywhere. It shouldn’t stop me from moving to Melbourne.

Let me know what you guys think about this issue and please share any of your experiences.

OMG I CAN’T BREATHE

I need help. Major financial help.

I need a $12,116 deposit right now to hold my spot at Melbourne.

Tuition is $40,000/year.

Rent is around $250-350/week.

Maximum lifetime student line of credit I can get for optometry is only $80,000.
Maximum lifetime student loan from the government is around $20,000/year.

Yup, I’m royally screwed in the butt.

Donations for Michelle’s shelter and eating fund? Anyone? Please?

I got into the Melbourne OD program! =D

Oh happy day!

Anyone has any advice/information on living and going to school in Melbourne, loans/scholarships, or any tidbits, I’d really appreciate it!

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Melbourne, why you gotta break my heart like that?

So the annual available spots for the University of Melbourne OD program is 60.

NOT 65 as I previously thought.

Meaning, slim chance that I, an international student, will get an offer.
